It's funny you mention it. I've been reading a book for my Criminology class called "Creating Fear: News and the Construction of Crisis". David Altheide essentially displays the discourse of fear as a form of socioeconomic and political control. If you haven't read it already, it's worth a once-over if you you're into crime as portrayed in the media.
